No Petting Please!

I am not pet person. I don’t like pets. In fact I don’t like animals in general.

Born in the Year of the Dog, I don’t like dogs. I feel that they’re always out to get me. I don’t find the furry Shih Tzu dog cute …. at all. Unfortunately my in-laws love dogs. They own several Shih Tzu dogs. It is OK to kiss dogs in their house. Dogs are carried around, bathed, and combed there. My only consolation is that my husband doesn't like dogs, too.

I also grew up in a household that has at least 3 dogs and 2 cats. In fact, there were times when we had more than 3 dogs. My father is a dog lover. I believe he is the only one in our family (Oh my sister-in-law loves dogs, too. But that’s about it.) He has a big black Doberman (we call Doberdog) that barks and howls like dogs do in horror movies. My mother don’t like dogs, too and because she’s the one who makes sure that the house is tidy, dogs are never allowed inside the house, just perfect for me.

Aside from dogs (and frogs and rodents), I specially hate snakes. I hate pictures of snakes, movies with snakes, snake stories, I even squirm at images of snakes while channel surfing.

On Tuesday night, I came home from work around 7.30 pm. There’s a basketball court in front of my apartment and because there were about 15 teenagers hanging out by my gate, I thought probably there was a game. I parked my car close to the gutter where three teenage boys where sitting, giggling at some videos on their cell phones. I proceeded to open my gate, went in, and closed the gate the usual way. Then the unusual happened. I felt something on my left foot and thinking it was a piece of rope, I tried to kick it away. Only to realize to my horror that it was not a rope! It was a snake!!!

I screamed and froze. I felt all my hairs were standing up (even on areas not exposed). The teenagers have now gathered at my gate trying to help me get out but I was begging them not to throw anything that might disturb the snake and decide to glide towards my direction. The snake was as thick as my thumb and about two feet long. I was able to inch my way out of the gate after what felt like forever. After more commotion, a Barangay Tanod volunteered to help and successfully killed the snake. He told it was “ahas tulog” and I should not be scared of it because it was harmless. You kidding? I don’t care if it’s “ahas gising” or “ahas tulog” or “ahas patay”… to me a snake is a snake is a snake! I heard some of the people who came by my gate that night saying that snakes bring good luck to homes they visit. Yeah, right. If I die of fear from finding a snake in my house, that’s good luck.

And don’t even get me started on people with snakes as pets.
